MCS Sustainability Plan: Building a Greener Future

Imagine a future where Modesto City Schools leads the way in creating cleaner, greener, and brighter environments for our students, staff, and community. That vision is at the heart of the MCS Sustainability Plan, a district-wide initiative currently under development by a dedicated committee of nearly 30 people.

The committee is made up of a variety of MCS staff members and student voices. Participants include Davis High School seniors, Nutrition Services team members, custodial staff, and managers from Maintenance and Operations, all working together to bring their unique expertise and perspectives to the table, showcasing the power of teamwork across departments. Together, they are collaborating in working sessions to create a forward-thinking roadmap that reaches beyond classrooms and into the broader community.

This plan builds upon existing sustainability efforts —such as solar power installations at school sites and the introduction of electric buses—while exploring new initiatives that will ensure MCS remains environmentally responsible for generations to come.

Sustaining Success: A Unified Effort

“There are already so many wonderful things happening within MCS — so, creating a plan that helps sustain those efforts is the overarching goal within this committee,” said Debra Hendricks, formerly the Superintendent of Sylvan Unified School District, the facilitator of the MCS Sustainability Committee.

Hendricks, who has led many groups and committees to success as an independent consultant in education, said she is impressed with the progress this group has made in such a short time.

“This group brings their individual passion; the way they work together to create ideas that not one could have brought to the table on their own - their like-mindedness has really built some amazing ideas for the district,” Hendricks said. “I want district staff to know that they are well represented within this committee, and it’s for the good of all.

Inclusive, Forward-Focused Planning

The MCS Sustainability Plan prioritizes inclusivity, ensuring every staff member, student, and community member has a role in its success.

“All aspects are being addressed: all sites, all departments, and even the community will have a place organically in this plan,” Hendricks noted.

The committee is currently developing specific structures, timelines, and projects to bring the vision to life. Their goal is to finalize the plan and share it with district employees by the Spring of 2025.
